• Project Name: Railway Traverser Drive Refurbishment: Principles and a WCE RTE Case Study
  • Client: A client in the rail sector
  • Description: Railway traverser drive refurbishment with new wheel sets and gear drive

A railway traverser moves rail vehicles sideways from one track to another inside a depot. Over time, its wheel sets and gear drive wear out. As a result, the traverser runs unevenly and may derail. This article explains how a railway traverser works and what a sound refurbishment covers. It also presents a case study by WCE’s RTE Business Unit.

1. What Is a Railway Traverser?

A traverser is a long steel platform with rails on top. It runs on its own track, which crosses the depot tracks at a right angle. First, a vehicle rolls onto the platform. Next, the traverser carries it across to the target track. Finally, the vehicle rolls off.

The machine has three main parts. These are the wheel sets that carry the load, the drive unit with motor, gearbox, and shafts, and the control cabinet in the operator cabin.

2. Key Principles for Drive Refurbishment

Wheel sets and alignment
Standards for rail-mounted equipment such as cranes set tolerances for wheels and travel tracks. Misalignment adds extra load on wheels and rails. Therefore, parts wear faster and the risk of derailment rises [1].

Gear drive
Gears must carry their load over a long service life. ISO 6336 is the international method for rating the load capacity of spur and helical gears [2].

Electrical equipment
Machine electrical equipment should meet safety rules, for example, overcurrent protection and emergency stop. IEC 60204-1 sets these general requirements [3].

3. Case Study: Railway Traverser Drive Refurbishment by WCE RTE

  • Scope: Refurbishment of a railway traverser drive in a rolling stock depot
  • Client: A client in the rail sector
  • Contract duration: 120 days
  • Status: 100% completed, delivered on 31 May 2024

The team completed the work in four steps:

  • Inspected the traverser and recorded its condition before repair.
  • Listed the electrical parts to replace. In addition, the team drew the new wheel sets and gear drive for client approval.
  • Fabricated new wheel sets and a new gear drive to replace the worn parts.
  • Installed the new parts and set the alignment, so the traverser runs without derailing.

4. Lessons from This Project

Client approval of the drawings before fabrication helped the new parts fit the existing structure the first time. Meanwhile, the alignment step after installation decided whether the railway traverser could return to safe service.

5. WCE RTE Services

WCE’s RTE Business Unit provides rail engineering services. These include rolling stock maintenance, parts supply, maintenance equipment fabrication, and refurbishment of depot machinery.
